March for Babies

I wrote this last year for my Walk America page (now called March for Babies). I think it's still a very appropriate message for this year as well.

Every year, half a million babies in the U.S. are born prematurely. Premature birth is the leading cause of newborn death and many life long disabilities. The funds we raise in WalkAmerica support research that saves babies' lives.

Erik and I lost a baby in October 2004 when my membranes ruptured prematurely at just a few days shy of 19 weeks. We got to meet and hold our son, Dante, even though he never took a breath. This made my pregnancy with Dahlia all the more nerve-wracking, and even though she was full-term and healthy, she spent a few days in the NICU up at Stony Brook Hospital.

So many of my friends, local and online, have been touched by pregnancy loss and prematurity. Their stories have affected me very deeply, and I'm tearing up now as I write this just thinking about all their precious children, living and departed.

Please won't you consider pledging $5 to the March of Dimes Walk America?

This year, we're walking for all of them. Every baby deserves a full 9 months.

Humans Crave Violence Just Like Sex

This was forwarded to me in email (thanks, Aedan!) and we were discussing it at a social gathering last night.

I'm going to see if I can't hunt up more information on this. Discuss! :)

The study was conducted at Vanderbilt University. Here's a more detailed link:

I went hunting for the actual study from their link to and it's not up there yet so far as I can tell.

Twelve Years

Twelve years ago today, I got stranded in the Bronx at [ profile] mobiboros's house due to parking on a big block of ice that we couldn't get my '85 Chevy Blazer out of in the middle of the night.

This morning, we were both up bright and early to take care of Dahlia and get her ready for school. We forgot to put her blankie in the car for naptime.

Happy Anniversary, Pookie!!!

I can haz haircut and color

Yesterday was a very exciting day for me.
I got my reading glasses fixed so they don't constantly slide down and off my face anymore. Very exciting! Yay seeing!

Then, I got my hair trimmed and colored professionally. The punky little hairdresser asked if it would be OK if she did some highlights and I said yes, and then she went nutty. I love it! Please do tell me if it looks really dumb, though. I mean, it's just hair. It'll grow back if I have to re-dye it or cut it off or something.

Not especially awesome pictures below the cut )

Gphone and OLPC

There's 2 different bits of geek-directed hype going around the newswire recently.

First off, a first look at the non-existent "GPhone":

The interface looks shockingly like that of my shiny new iPhone. I can only hope that Apple starts offering Third Party App support soon. I mean, I get the basic data functionality that I want from it, though I miss the data push of my Blackberry. I also kinda miss having a dedicated email address specifically for my phone, such as I had with my Blackberry. It's not even that an essential app (other than chat) is really /missing/ from the phone, but I like the /option/ of adding more applications. So far, I'm not having tremendous love for the Webapps. They're functional, but I don't dig that they have to get into Safari first. I find it amusing that the icons shown in the Android demo are the same icons on my iPhone.

Oh yeah, late memo: I got an iPhone!!!

Secondly, the OLPC. What, you ask, is OLPC? Why, it's One Laptop Per Child! MIT has been developing these for awhile and they were supposed to come in at a $100 price break. It's a fascinating concept, actually. My geeky little heart has wanted one for quite some time, and I was thinking of all kinds of black market ways to acquire one. Now that they're having an offer to just /buy/ them, I'm not sure how I feel. They also came in at $200 each, instead of the original intended $100/each. Here's a link:

The Battle of Agincourt was fought on 25 October 1415 (Saint Crispin's Day), in northern France as part of the Hundred Years' War. Famous for being the day that Henry V won his great victory against France, this is still an annual English celebration, toasting to Henry's miraculous win in Agincourt.

As Shakespeare so well put it:

O that we now had here
But one ten thousand of those men in England
That do no work to-day!

What's he that wishes so?
My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin:
If we are mark'd to die, we are enow
To do our country loss; and if to live,
The fewer men, the greater share of honour.
God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more.
By Jove, I am not covetous for gold,
Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost;
It yearns me not if men my garments wear;
Such outward things dwell not in my desires:
But if it be a sin to covet honour,
I am the most offending soul alive.
No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England:
God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour
As one man more, methinks, would share from me
For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more!
Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host,
That he which hath no stomach to this fight,
Let him depart; his passport shall be made
And crowns for convoy put into his purse:
We would not die in that man's company
That fears his fellowship to die with us.
This day is called the feast of Crispian:
He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
He that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian:'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
And say 'These wounds I had on Crispin's day.'
Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
But he'll remember with advantages
What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
Familiar in his mouth as household words
Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
Be in their flowing cups freshly remember'd.
This story shall the good man teach his son;
And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remember'd;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile,
This day shall gentle his condition:
And gentlemen in England now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

Pennsic -- yeah, it's pretty much like that.

Workin Late

Yhup, it's midnight. I'm just now finishing up some paperwork type stuff I brought home with me to finish tonight so I have half a chance of not drowning this week in work. It's kinda rare that I need to do this, but it's been long overdue. I hope I can catch up some more tomorrow and be back on track for Monday so I don't have to bring more home again. Ugh.

I have done a lot of thinking this weekend. Those familiar with my standard MO will be happy to know that I"m moving on past anxiety well into the land of logical thinking and getting angry.

Carry on.

Friends Only

So, I've taken the first step. All my entries are now at least friends only locked.

Maybe at some point I'll go through and tag all my entries and at the same time, I'll evaluate the content for additional filtering.

Friends cut coming up soon for folks I haven't heard back from on the reading survey a few posts back.
